When you tap a tile and it sounds hollow — like tapping on a drum — the adhesive bond between the tile and the substrate beneath it has broken down. A void has formed. The tile is no longer properly attached to what's holding it up.
Left alone, drummy tiles crack under foot traffic, lift at the edges, and allow water to enter the void and spread to neighbouring tiles. In wet areas like bathrooms and pool surrounds, that water works its way through to the waterproofing membrane below — turning a straightforward injection job into a full membrane replacement.
The old approach was demolition: jackhammer the tile out, prep the substrate, try to source a matching tile (which almost never works), relay and regrout. The result is always visible, always expensive, and always more disruptive than necessary. There is a better approach — and we've been using it in FNQ for over 20 years.

A precise, controlled process that takes hours rather than days — and leaves the tile surface looking exactly as it did before we arrived.
We systematically tap every tile in the affected area to identify all hollow-sounding tiles and map exactly where the bond has failed. This prevents missing tiles that would fail shortly after.
Small access holes — 2 to 3mm — are drilled into the grout lines adjacent to the loose tile. The tile surface itself is never drilled or touched at any point in the process.
Specialised adhesive is injected under controlled pressure into the void beneath the tile. The adhesive flows through the cavity, filling it completely and bonding the tile firmly back to the substrate.
Access holes are filled with matching grout. We tap test again to confirm the solid bond. Most areas are ready for foot traffic within 3 to 4 hours of completion.
Will the drill holes show? The holes are drilled into grout lines — not the tile face — and filled with matching grout on completion. In most cases the repair is virtually invisible. Aged or discoloured grout won't match perfectly, but the tile surface is never marked.
Understanding the cause matters — it determines whether injection alone will hold, or whether there's an underlying issue to address first.
Water infiltrating through cracked grout or failed waterproofing saturates the adhesive layer. Over time, this breaks the bond from the substrate. Common in bathrooms, wet areas and pool surrounds.
Applying adhesive in blobs rather than full-bed coverage creates voids beneath tiles from the very first day. These collapse under foot traffic and thermal cycling. Extremely common in older Queensland buildings.
Buildings move — slabs settle, subfloors shift, and temperature changes cause expansion and contraction. Without adequate expansion joints, tiles have nowhere to go and the adhesive bond fails instead.
Far North Queensland's temperature extremes — particularly on outdoor areas, pool surrounds and north-facing walls — put the adhesive bond under repeated stress that weakens it progressively over time.
Tile adhesives have a service life of 15 to 30 years. In Queensland's humidity and heat, that timeline shortens. Older buildings frequently develop widespread drummy areas simply because the adhesive has reached the end of its life.
Grout is the first line of defence. When it cracks, crumbles or goes missing, water enters and attacks the adhesive below. Grout failure and tile debonding almost always go hand in hand.
Tile injection is suitable for almost any tiled surface — indoors and outdoors, floor and wall, residential and commercial.

Loose balcony tiles are a safety risk as well as a water risk. We rebond them without the need to strip and relay the entire balcony surface — particularly important when matching tiles are no longer available.
Wall tiles behind benchtops and floor tiles in kitchens can be injected without disturbing appliances or cabinetry — saving the cost and disruption of a kitchen renovation.
